Cedar/Spalted Maple
Model BZ-2525

Spalted maple is the result of a fungus which attacks the wood, entering through holes created by insects. You can see the 'spalting' streaks all have insect holes at their centers. The fungus moves in from the hole and discolors the wood as it begins to spread, resulting in this unusual coloration. The fungus dies when the wood is properly seasoned, and the wood retains the color. As long as the fungus isn't left to continue its attack on the wood, no significant physical damage takes place. The holes are filled with epoxy and ebony dust.
